Hello! I am Emily Draher, a 20-something nail artist, writer, and dog-mom, born and raised in Canton, OH. I love a pair of stretchy leggings, a coffee mug with a catchy phrase, and Tina Fey just as much as the next aging millennial female, but I’m here to tell you – there is more going on in the minds and hearts of Gen Y than we get credit for. We all have a voice, and I will be sharing mine here on Casual Contrast.
I’ve been told that I have a big personality, which is sort of ironic, because I view myself as largely an introvert – I savor alone time (or time with my pup) and need it to recharge. But, once I’m with people, I tend to soak up that energy like crazy, good or bad. I have the soul of an artist and the mind of a scientist (which, as you can imagine, results in some major anxiety). I’m a vegetarian, morning person, dog-lover, and I believe in the power of leopard print. I think you should listen to your gut and do what you want. ❤
When I’m not writing and creating content for Casual Contrast, I am spending time with my outrageously supportive and hilarious husband of nearly five years, Benn, who is a professional videographer and was my middle school crush. Our spirited fur-child, Bob Draher, keeps us busy, in a great way! I’m a Parks and Rec addict, Netflix binge-watcher, football fan, bubble bath lover, and coffee drinker.
After losing my dad to pancreatic cancer when I was a freshman in college, I realized that Life Is Short (cliche, but oh so true) and that I needed to follow my passion and bliss, no matter what. Since then, that is what I have aimed to do. I’ve spent all of my adult life swirling around through academic and creative passions, starting with a BS in biology with a minor in environmental science in 2010. I completed two years of graduate school in biology, teaching labs and reading papers, but quickly figured out that while that might be my academic passion, it did not translate into a lifelong career path for me. I left academia, focused on my emotional and mental health and followed my heart right to cosmetology school. I earned my managing manicurist license from the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology in 2012 (the same year I launched The Lacquerologist) and have worked in the beauty industry ever since.
In 2013, alongside my business partner Stephanie, I opened a boutique nail spa in Canton, OH. For the last three years, I provided clients with non-invasive manicures and pedicures and the cutest, customizable nail art in town at Body•Spa•Banquet Nails. After careful consideration, I decided to close up shop in Spring 2016 and focus exclusively on rebranding The Lacquerologist into a more in-depth lifestyle blog. It has been the most intellectually stimulating challenge yet, which must mean I’m on the right track!
In 2015, my first book was released, Idiot’s Guides: Nail Art from Alpha Books. I love having the opportunity to share the happiness that nail art can create with as many people as possible. You can purchase your copy [here]!
